Technical Notes and Briefs: Changes in the WWVB Radio Signal Affects Precision Frequency and Timing Reference

Spectracom had used the WWVB signal to synchronize its time and frequency references and master clocks in North America before the wide-spread use of GPS for precision timing applications. The last of these WWVB products has not been promoted for over 10 years and officially went end-of-life in 2005. A change in the WWVB signal was being considered in recent years to reduce impact of electro-magnetic interference and allowing for improved reception in consumer-grade clocks and watches1. However, this change affects the operation of precise time and frequency standards whose receivers are based on phase-locked loops, such as Spectracom WWVB receivers, so these products will no longer operate as intended.

White Papers: Zone Based Indoor Location Using GNSS Simulators Signals from Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS), such as the Global Positioning System (GPS), are very weak and usually cannot be seen indoors or underground. A common method to overcome the problem of receiving GNSS signals indoors or underground is to use a GPS/GNSS repeater with an antenna located outdoors to receive the GNSS signals and an amplifier/antenna to re-transmit the signal indoors. This paper describes the technologies and methods for creating an intelligent repeater system including time synchronization at the nanosecond, microsecond, and millisecond levels, how each synchronization level affects the overall system and methods for achieving each, power level considerations including power level requirements between zones and how they affect transitions from one zone to another, data transfer and example system configurations. While GPS is primarily demonstrated and tested, the possibility for adding other GNSS constellations such as QZSS, BeiDou, Galileo, and GLONASS are also presented. pdf - 270 KB

White Papers: Testing GNSS Receivers to Harden Against Spoofing Attacks Spoofing is an attempt to deceive the GNSS/GPS receiver by broadcasting signals that the receiver will use instead of the live sky signals. This article describes a test system for spoofing allows testing the three major factors to consider in a spoofing attack, time synchronization to the signals to be spoofed, power level of the spoofing signal compared to the live sky signals, and accuracy of the position obtained by the spoofing signal to that of the actual position of the device being spoofed. Case Studies: GPS Timing Integration for Small Form Factor PDRS

Spectracom’s TSync bus-level timing platform was integrated into a new small, rugged, Passive Detection and Reporting System (PDRS) to receive GPS, discipline an onboard rugged ovenized crystal oscillator and generate high precision time and frequency signals for system synchronization. It also delivers GPS coordinates for the system.

The development of the system greatly benefited from Spectracom's customization-to-COTS approach by adapting the platform into a standard VPX-based card without the need for non-recurring engineering charges. It offered the necessary ruggedization, small size, and low weight and power consumption to meet the goals of system portability, and is available with secure SAASM GPS.

Other: EC1S Discontinuance Notice The EC1S compact GPS clock module, which was first introduced in 2002, is now End Of Life and no longer available, effective immediately. EC1S closest replacement is VersaSync, which offers unsurpassed modularity and performance, in a much more rugged enclosure. VersaSync offers as well many improved features and functionality, as a network time server.

Standard support for the Epsilon Clock 1S is expected to be available up to 2021.
